Driving Sustainability: The Role of EVs in Market Dynamics and Circularity

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterScientificpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter highlights the pivotal role of EV manufacturers and their ability to incorporate circular approaches for EV batteries. Despite the various challenges of integrating circularity with the overall EV system, the anticipated adoption of EV far outweighs the speculated demand. Starting with the EV motivation to save the environment is inspiring and must keep the effort alive, but its economic impact often overshadows its premise as a forgotten promise. Proponents of EVs are aware of these inherent challenges the industry faces. However, recent barriers and limitations, such as the new tariff war, have exacerbated these challenges. The resulting economic slowdown and strict trade blockades are further complicating the situation. This situation is extraordinary, emphasizing that common sense should prevail for the benefit of environmental sustainability. The primary challenge is to uphold the moral mission by curtailing the process of depleting Earth’s resources. This can happen by fostering the principles of circularity, ranging from refuse to recycle. The fragmentation of supply sources for EV batteries happens to be the most crucial aspect of the EV ecosystem, which must be managed sensibly to avoid the drastic environmental effects caused by their extraction. While leaders, enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs are brimming with innovative ideas, the ability to develop methods, products, and processes in a circular manner represents a new kind of strategic challenge for designing EV battery components. The authors discussed these aspects to not only present a holistic picture of EVs globally but also highlight circular approaches, challenges, and future pathways. It is concluded that this is a supply chain war, and those who understand the rules of supply chain and implement circular systems integrated with EV diaspora can gain a significant advantage over others. However, it is critical to recognize the importance of this vision, as well as the need to align circular strategy with the overall strategy. Circularity is not a fad; it is a reality that must be prioritized before pursuing EV economic benefits. From the inception of EVs, the goal has been to prioritize environmental sustainability. Therefore, the circularity approach must be at the forefront of EV technology. This chapter reinforces this perspective.
