Abstract
The increase in e-commerce is creating a growing number of last mile deliveries in
urban areas. Last mile delivery (LMD) is costly, complex, and poses many
environmental and social sustainability challenges. Retailers play a key role in
increasing the sustainability of LMD. This study explores retailers' practical
interpretation of sustainability in LMD and contributes by shedding light on retailer's
practical interpretations of and perspectives on sustainability. The results show that
retailers interpret sustainability in LMD as environmental sustainability that can be
tackled through carbon compensation. Their perspective on sustainability, as manifested in their LMD operations, can be described as instrumental.
