Retailers provide an important role in delivering services to society, taking an intermediation role between customers, consumers shoppers, product, and service, suppliers. Changes in retail, related to new processes, ways of work, and new technology, especially information technology, enable that intermediation to be carried out in new ways. This entry considers such innovations from both a demand and a supply perspective. Examples discussed include the role of artificial intelligence (AI), Point-Of-Sale (POS) payment tills, loyalty programmes, online retailing, mobile apps, social media marketing, omnichannel retail media, digital pricing, virtual mirrors, virtual reality (VR) worlds, augmented reality (AR), supply chain transparency, resilient operations, data mining, digital simulations, and online training.
