Community Engagement and Social Impacts of Palm Oil Waste Management

Palm oil production generates significant volumes of solid and liquid waste, creating environmental pressures while presenting opportunities for community-based sustainability initiatives. This chapter examines the role of community engagement in shaping the social outcomes of palm oil waste management and highlights the risks and benefits experienced by local populations living near plantations and mills. The discussion explores how poorly managed waste affects community health, water quality, air quality, and rural livelihoods. In contrast, effective community participation in waste valorisation activities such as composting, bioenergy production, and cooperative-based recycling can strengthen local economies and support circular economy objectives. The chapter integrates technological, social, and policy perspectives to show how inclusive community participation contributes to equitable and sustainable waste management practices. The findings emphasise the importance of local knowledge, transparent governance, and fair benefit sharing in advancing socially responsible palm oil waste management.
