Humanitarian logistics, a branch of supply chain management, involves planning, purchasing, transporting, and storing resources for humanitarian relief in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. The diverse activities cater to various crises and needs, from shelter to healthcare. Challenges include unknown demand, disrupted supply chains, access and security concerns, irreparable infrastructure damage, and market instability. Effective delivery relies on collaboration among various partners, including but not limited to governments, non-government organisations, the United Nations, logistics service providers, and local communities. Different transport modes such as air, road, rail, and sea are used to varying degrees based on the disaster phase, environment, infrastructure conditions, and needs on the ground.
