Sammanfattning
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to analyse the challenges that hinder the halal supply chain (HSC) implementation, identify pertinent solutions and develop relevant strategies for implementation among companies in the cosmetic sector.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study commenced with a literature review to map the current challenges, solutions and strategies of HSC implementation in the cosmetics industry. The analytical network process (ANP) method was performed with three groups of experts, namely, governmental officials, academics and practitioners, to validate the indicators and prioritise the most vital challenges, solutions and strategies.
Findings
A total of seven categories were discovered in SCM implementation in the halal cosmetic sector, namely, the process, packaging, warehousing, transportation, fundamentals, policy and technology. The most prevalent challenge was the lack of a traceability system for halal products, with the most popular solution as separate containers for halal cosmetic products and giving a halal sign or code on each container. Meanwhile, the most predominant strategy was collaborating with blockchain associations to support the implementation of blockchain technology.
Originality/value
Limited attention was paid to the HSC in the cosmetics sector. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the current study is the first attempt to map the challenges, solutions and strategies for HSC implementation within the cosmetics industry in a developing country.
