Sammanfattning

With this introductory chapter we set the scene for exploring university social responsibility. We start with the demarcation of historical development of the concept of social responsibility and we further emphasise the extent to which this field has been studied so far. We describe some impetus that affected the emergence of social responsibility inherent not only to private, but also to public sector organisations, including higher education institutions. We end this chapter with a short introduction to the chapters that provide different avenues to university social responsibility.
